Understanding Body Mass Index (BMI)

BMI (Body Mass Index) is a simple and widely used screening tool to assess whether your weight is healthy for your height. Developed by Belgian statistician Adolphe Quetelet in the 19th century, BMI is now used globally by healthcare professionals as a quick indicator of potential weight-related health risks.

While BMI provides a useful general guideline, it doesn't account for factors like muscle mass, bone density, age, sex, or body fat distribution. Athletes and muscular individuals may have a high BMI despite having low body fat. For a complete health assessment, consult with a healthcare professional.

Health Risks by BMI Category

  • Underweight (<18.5): Risk of malnutrition, osteoporosis, weakened immune system
  • Normal (18.5-24.9): Lowest risk of weight-related health problems
  • Overweight (25-29.9): Increased risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes
  • Obese (≥30): Higher risk of serious health conditions including heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers
