Frequently Asked Questions

How much zakat do I have to pay?

Zakat is 2.5% of your net zakatable wealth, provided that wealth has stayed at or above the nisab for a full lunar year.

What is the nisab?

The nisab is the minimum wealth on which zakat becomes due: the value of 87.48 grams (7.5 tola) of gold or 612.36 grams (52.5 tola) of silver. Many scholars recommend the silver standard because it is lower and so includes more people who can give.

Which assets count towards zakat?

Cash, bank and mobile-wallet balances, gold and silver, shares and savings certificates, business stock held for sale, and money owed to you that you expect to be repaid. Your home, car and personal belongings are not included.

Can I subtract debts?

Debts and bills that are due now can be subtracted. Scholars differ on long-term debts such as a mortgage, so check with a scholar you trust.

What is a vori or tola?

A vori (bhori) or tola is a traditional unit for gold equal to 11.664 grams. You can enter the metal price per gram or per vori.

Formula Used

Zakat = 2.5% × (zakatable assets − current debts), if the result ≥ nisab

The nisab is the value of 87.48 g of gold or 612.36 g of silver at today's price. If your net zakatable wealth stays at or above it for a lunar year, 2.5% of that wealth is due.
