Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between margin and markup?

Margin is profit as a percentage of the selling price; markup is profit as a percentage of the cost. A product that costs 75 and sells for 100 has a 25% margin but a 33.3% markup.

How do I find the price for a target margin?

Price = Cost ÷ (1 − margin). For a 30% margin on a cost of 70, the price is 70 ÷ 0.7 = 100.

Can the margin be negative?

Yes. If the selling price is below the cost you are making a loss, and both margin and markup come out negative.

Is it free?

Yes, free with no sign-up, and everything is calculated in your browser.

Formula Used

Margin = (Price − Cost) / Price × 100; Markup = (Price − Cost) / Cost × 100

Margin measures profit against revenue, markup measures it against cost. To hit a target margin m, set Price = Cost ÷ (1 − m).
